What is the 1st Amendment and what does it have to do with flag burning?
The First Amendment, Freedom of Speech
Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of Religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; of abridging the freedom of speech, or the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redness of grievances. Protect the First Amendment.
The First Amendment protects what a person does even if it's offensive or disagreeable if the purpose of the action is to communicate or express an idea. It gives people the right to express legally their ideas that are unpopular or extreme.
According to Johnson's lawyer, "The flag burning case of Johnson goes straight to the heart of the First Amendment…to hear things or see things we hate tests the First Amendment more than seeing or hearing things we like. They (things we like) never needed a
First Amendment.
